Pirastro Tonica Viola strings have a synthetic, Nylon core that produces a lovely round sound with perfect balance across all four strings. They respond instantly to any bowing style, rewarding the player and listener with a direct and open sound.
They have substantially reduced background ‘hiss’ so that players can sustain a more even tone helping to achieve smoother string crossings.
With a highly responsive left hand feel, Tonica strings remain very easy to play all the way up to the highest positions.
New Tonica Formula
The new formulation of Tonica strings has had their projection and brilliance upgraded without compromising their warmth. Playing pianissimo has also been greatly improved. The new formula makes all bow strokes possible, giving smooth crossings between notes. They have an easy right hand articulation and tone attack.
As medium tension strings, they are suitable for all Violas and due to their synthetic core they are impervious to temperature and humidity changes.
- The A and D strings are Aluminium wound
- The G is Silver wound

There are four sizes of Tonica Viola strings they are listed below along with Viola length of back to make sure you choose the correct size for your Viola.
- 4/4 for violas with a 15″ – 16 1/4″
- 40cm for Violas with a 16 1/4″ back
- 43cm – for Violas with a 17″ back
- 3/4 – 1/2 – for Violas with a back length of 15″ or less
