Crafted in the heart of Romania by experienced European luthiers, the Bass Bags Workshop Maiastru Double Bass is a beautifully made, fully carved double bass designed for advancing students, conservatoire musicians and serious performers. Combining traditional craftsmanship with carefully selected tonewoods, the Maiastru delivers the rich, complex voice and expressive response that only an all-solid instrument can provide.

The carved solid spruce top works in harmony with the solid maple back and ribs to produce exceptional warmth, depth and projection. Whether you’re performing orchestral repertoire, exploring the nuances of jazz, or studying at an advanced level, the Maiastru offers the dynamic range and tonal colour needed to inspire confident playing.

Its elegant gamba-shaped body provides a traditional appearance while maintaining excellent balance and comfortable playability. Every instrument features genuine ebony fittings, attractive inlaid purfling and quality Tyrolean-style nickel-plated machine heads, creating an instrument that is as reliable as it is visually striking.

As with every Bass Bags Workshop instrument, the Maiastru is professionally inspected and expertly prepared in our Derbyshire workshop before it reaches you. Unlike many factory-supplied basses, each instrument is individually set up by our experienced luthiers to maximise tone, playability and reliability.

To suit every player’s needs, the Maiastru is available with a range of setup options, including adjustable or standard bridges and a choice of premium strings. This allows us to tailor every instrument to your playing style, repertoire and budget before it leaves our workshop.

The name Maiastru comes from Romanian folklore, representing a mythical bird renowned for beauty, wisdom and extraordinary song—qualities that perfectly reflect the musical character of this exceptional European-made instrument.
