Description
Crafted in the heart of Romania by experienced European luthiers, the Bass Bags Workshop Maiastru Double Bass is a beautifully made, fully carved all-solid instrument designed for advancing students, conservatoire musicians and serious performers. Combining traditional craftsmanship with carefully selected European tonewoods and the expertise of our Derbyshire workshop, the Maiastru offers the rich, complex voice, effortless response and refined playability expected from a professional-quality double bass.
Unlike many traditionally built Romanian double basses, which have often been known for their heavier construction, the Maiastru has been built using a lighter, more refined approach inspired by classic German double bass making. This produces an instrument that feels noticeably more responsive under both bow and pizzicato, offers excellent projection and remains comfortable to play throughout long rehearsals, performances and practice sessions.
The carved solid European spruce top works in harmony with the solid maple back and ribs to create a warm, rich and beautifully balanced sound with impressive projection. Whether you’re performing orchestral repertoire, exploring the nuances of jazz or studying at an advanced level, the Maiastru provides the tonal depth, dynamic range and expressive character to inspire confident playing.
Its elegant gamba-shaped body combines traditional styling with comfortable playability, while genuine ebony fittings, traditional inserted purfling and a beautifully applied golden brown varnish complete an instrument that is every bit as attractive as it is musical.
The Bass Bags Workshop Difference
Every Bass Bags Workshop double bass begins life as an unfinished instrument, carefully crafted in Romania before arriving at our Derbyshire workshop.
Unlike many retailers, we don’t simply unpack the instrument and send it straight to the customer. Every Maiastru is individually assembled, upgraded and professionally prepared by our experienced double bass specialists before it is offered for sale.
This allows us to transform an excellent European instrument into one that reflects the standards of the Bass Bags Workshop.
As part of our workshop specification, every Maiastru receives:
- Premium Rubner brass Tyrolean machine heads, professionally fitted and adjusted for exceptionally smooth, precise tuning and outstanding long-term reliability.
- Our premium German-made ebony and steel endpin, replacing the standard factory component. Featuring a solid 10 mm steel rod, brass fittings and a cork-lined housing, it offers improved stability, durability and smooth, vibration-free adjustment.
- Individual bridge fitting and adjustment.
- Soundpost adjustment to optimise tone, projection and response.
- Your choice of premium strings professionally installed.
- Final inspection and play testing before leaving our workshop.
Rather than simply selling a Romanian double bass, we create a Bass Bags Workshop Specification instrument that’s individually refined and prepared to perform at its very best from the moment it arrives.
Tailored to Your Playing
Every bassist is different, which is why every Maiastru is prepared to suit its future owner.
Whether you’re looking for the powerful projection required for orchestral playing, the warmth and flexibility preferred by jazz musicians or a versatile setup for conservatoire study, we’ll help you choose the most appropriate bridge, strings and playing setup before your instrument leaves our workshop.
The result is a double bass that feels comfortable, responsive and ready to perform from day one.
Collection or Personal Delivery
Most customers choose to visit our Derbyshire showroom, where they can compare a range of instruments side by side and receive honest advice from our experienced team before selecting the right bass.
For customers further afield, we regularly deliver double basses using our own vehicle and experienced staff wherever practical. Unlike conventional parcel couriers, your instrument is transported by people who understand double basses, ensuring it arrives safely, fully prepared and ready to play.
A Name with Meaning
The name Maiastru comes from Romanian folklore, representing a mythical bird celebrated for its beauty, wisdom and extraordinary song.
Those same qualities inspired the creation of this instrument—a beautifully crafted European double bass that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern workshop refinement to produce an instrument capable of inspiring musicians for many years to come.
