Tuning double basses and cellos with a digital tuner has always been a bit hit and miss. The main problem is the tuner picking up the lower frequencies of the bass or cello reliably. The same problem is true with smartphone apps that also have the added downside of reducing your phone battery life quickly.
We trialed the Snark SN-2 with cellos and double basses and found that if you attach it to the bass side of the instrument’s bridge the results are superb and consistent. In vibration mode, it gives a very precise and steady indication even with the lowest frequencies.
As a result, we recommend the Snark SN-2 to people wishing to use a digital chromatic tuner to tune their cello or double bass.
